With the recent trend towards brands going from “legacy to legal”, the mainstream cannabis world is getting exposed to some of the legacy market’s most legendary growers. One of these legendary growers hoping to translate their gray market skills into regulated sales goes by the name The Chrontractor. Known across Canada for producing some of the finest and tastiest indoor quads in the land, Darryl AKA the Chrontractor, is helping Mill Creek produce incredibly high-quality cannabis, while at the same time plotting a course into the legal market. We sat down with him to learn more about why he began a career in cannabis cultivation and his motivation for growing some of the best flower in the business.

Chatting Cannabis with the Chrontractor

ADCANN:  It’s great to sit down with you. Please tell us a bit about yourself.

The Chrontractor:  My name is Darryl, but you can call me The Chrontractor. I am the master grower at Mill Creek Cannabis.

AC:  How did you get started in cannabis?

TC:  I’ve been growing dope since I was 15 years old, so almost 20 years. I started growing because I loved smoking weed but it was too expensive, so I grew to feed my passion for smoking weed. I ended up with a passion for the plant.

AC:  Without divulging any of your secrets, what are the keys to growing good cannabis?

TC:  Three things: Firstly, you have to be passionate and not just be in it for the money. Secondly, you need to start with good, clean genetics. Thirdly, take advantage of the grow technology that’s available today and you can control every element of your room.

AC:   What’s the most important thing you breed and grow for?

TC:   The total smoking experience. If you want to grow weed that people want to smoke over and over and over again, it’s got to be good. It’s gotta look good, it’s gotta taste good, it’s gotta hit good.  That’s the most important thing man – flavours and effect. THC is important but we’ve all smoked “low” THC flower that hits way harder than something high THC. I worry that this focus on THC is going to result in lots of bland weed that tests high.

AC:   When was the first time you noticed a cannabis “brand”?

TC:   I remember noticing the Jungle Boys about 10 years ago. They took over the scene for a bit and were the first to be public about their business. They had tons of drops and posted photos on social media before anyone else. They weren’t afraid to hustle and didn’t care who saw them. Before that, the strain names were the brands.

AC:   You mentioned working on your own brand. What made you want your own brand?

TC:   Really comes down to control, mainly control of what goes into the bags. That and consumer education. I’d like to use the brand to show there’s more to loud weed than THC.

AC:   Tell us about your new brand.

TC:   It’s called The Drip.We want to return to what made weed fun in the first place – huge flavours, lots of variety and fresh drops. Josh and I have been doing a lot of breeding in-house, smashing some of the best shit together and coming up with new genetics, new terpene combinations and giving the people what they want.

AC:   Why do you want to go legal?

TC:  Well mainly so I don’t have to look over my shoulder all the time! I also know lots of OG smokers who are turning to the legal market for safety and convenience and I think it would be great if anybody could go to their local store and be able to pick up our flavours. That’s the dream.

AC:   Where can people find you?

TC:  Hit me up on IG @thechrontractor and @thedrip.city.
