Tracing the origin of 4/20 all the way back to San Rafael High School in California in 1970, a group of students known as the Waldos would meet at 4:20 PM after school to search for a rumoured hidden cannabis crop. Their meeting spot was by a statue of Louis Pasteur, and they would use “420” as their code word for smoking cannabis. The term spread through the group and eventually gained wider popularity.

In 1990, Steve Bloom, the editor of High Times magazine, saw “420” written on a flyer while attending a Grateful Dead concert. He popularized the term within the magazine, further cementing its association within cannabis culture. Over time, April 20th became an unofficial holiday for marijuana enthusiasts, marked by celebrations, festivals, and activism worldwide.

Evolving from a simple code word into a symbol of cannabis advocacy and counterculture, representing camaraderie, rebellion, and the pursuit of freedom. Despite its humble beginnings, the term has permeated popular culture, becoming ingrained in the lexicon of weed enthusiasts globally. It is a day of heightened advocacy, pushing for legalization and, just as importantly, decriminalization and social justice reform. Activists and organizations use this day to continue to raise awareness about the medicinal benefits of cannabis, its economic potential, as well as the injustices of the war on drugs, particularly its disproportionate impact on marginalized communities.

Beyond activism, 4/20 has become a day of communal celebration, where people from all walks of life come together to enjoy cannabis culture. Festivals, concerts, and events take place across the globe, fostering a sense of camaraderie and belonging among participants. Artists, musicians, and entrepreneurs also seize the opportunity to showcase their talents and products, contributing to the vibrant atmosphere of the day.
