Weedmaps, the world’s first and largest cannabis technology company, has been named as the official sponsor of the Mike Tyson vs Roy Jones Jr. fight taking place on November 28th. This event has a substantial amount of anticipation and excitement behind it and will likely have millions of PPV viewers.
Mike Tyson vs. Roy Jones Jr.
Mike Tyson, former undisputed heavyweight world champion and cannabis advocate/entrepreneur, will be competing against Roy Jones Jr., former four-division world champion. The charity event is scheduled to take place at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, California – where cannabis is legal for medical and recreational purposes. This will be Mike Tyson’s first official bout since 2005.
The show will be hosted by Mario Lopez and will include performances from DaBaby, Lil Wayne, French Montana, Wiz Khalifa, and YG. Three other fights are on the card, including a strange matchup of YouTuber Jake Paul against three-time NBA slam dunk champion Nate Robinson.
Weedmaps and Triller Partnership
Triller, an American video-making and social-networking service, paid $50 million for the media rights to broadcast the event. Weedmaps marketing team partnered with Triller to become the official sponsor. Weedmaps’ branding will be displayed throughout the event, including in the ring, on-screen during the live broadcast, in the fighter’s locker rooms, and in the press room.
Weedmaps is the leading technology and software infrastructure provider to the cannabis industry in America. Founded in 2008 and headquartered in Irvine, California – the company employs more than 400 professionals around the world.
This is a first-of-its-kind sponsorship opportunity for the cannabis industry. Cannabis companies are typically limited in their abilities to market and promote. However, these restrictions (especially in the US) are often policy-based decisions made by platforms as opposed to stringent legal regulations. Weedmaps has an advantage when it comes to advertising because they do not actually touch the plant at all – they are simply a technology company that helps support the industry. By becoming the first cannabis-related sponsor of an event of this magnitude, Weedmaps opens the doors for other businesses in the industry to promote in a similar fashion in the future.
”We recognize this is a huge moment for the broader industry and through this sponsorship, we’re hoping to introduce a new audience to Weedmaps as well as bring attention to some of the important conversations happening around cannabis today. This is just one of many steps we are proactively taking to break down stigmas, promote social equity, and encourage all to join us in the fight for change.Juanjo Feijoo, Chief Marketing Officer at Weedmaps
Bobby Sarnevesht, executive chairman of Triller, is also quoted saying that the partnership with Weedmaps “helps fight the stigma surrounding the cannabis industry.”
Weedmaps and Nas – Justice Campaign
During the event, Weedmaps will debut a content collaboration narrated by Nas that focuses on the relationship between systemic racism, social equity, and cannabis prohibition. The PSA will air twice during the Mike Tyson vs Roy Jones Jr. fight occurring this Saturday.
Mike Tyson owns his own cannabis company, Tyson Holistic Holdings, which operates Tyson Ranch in California, Nevada, and is coming soon to Oklahoma. Tyson Ranch touts itself as a licensing and branding company that works with some of California’s finest licensed operators. The brand proclaims to be dedicated to consistency and quality and has a publicly stated mission to make cannabis universally understood. “Cereal Milk”, “Octane Mint”, “Miami Heat” and “Tyson Cookie” are some of the dried flower strains that are offered under the Tyson Ranch label.
Tyson Ranch’s products are prominently listed on Weedmaps’ website and mobile app.
